A couple of months ago in the Pittsburgh Airport I saw a full-fledged Rite-Aid. (Maybe I’ve been sleep walking through airports but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a full blown pharmacy in an airport before.) As I walked by — I surprisingly had no pharmacy purchase needs on this particular day — I noticed two very large signs behind the check out counter. The one on the left read “STOP SMOKING CENTER” while the one on the right read “TOBACCO.” Oh the irony. Oh the advertising. I could just imagine some poor soul standing there debating whether to ask from something from the left side or the right.

My family is a college sports family. Both my father and my brother work for college sports teams, football and men’s basketball respectively. My mom and sister believe that ESPN Game Day on Saturday mornings in the fall is perfect background ‘music’ to their morning activities. I played college basketball and have traveled more miles than I care to admit to watch college football games. So, yeah, we’re kind of into it.
But I have a gripe with sports commentators. They abuse and misuse the word ‘leadership.’ Watch football games on any given Saturday (or Thursday night or Friday night or even Wednesday nights at this time of the year), an you’ll hear some rather odd comments about leaders.

What are you more interested in becoming—-a great ‘success’ or a great ‘leader’?
Most of you probably answer ‘both.’ Generally that’s fine because 95%-98% of the time (I just made an educated guess at those numbers) being a great success and being a great leader are bosom buddies.
But what about when they aren’t? What happens when being the best leader you can be butts up against how you’ve defined success?
